Inspired by her son Colin, Margie Doyle has been an ardent supporter of LuMind IDSC contributing in many ways as an Honorary Board Member and chair of Funding Future Chicago. Funding Futures began in 2012 when a group of dedicated families in the Chicagoland area decided to host a fundraising event for LuMind RDS (then DSRTF) with live music, food, drinks and a silent auction.

colindoylesibsOn January 15, Chicago Parent featured the 8th Annual Funding Futures Chicago fundraiser as they get ready to break the $1 million mark raised for Down syndrome research.

“It’s been an overlooked and underfunded area. … Just because it is a syndrome doesn’t mean it doesn’t warrant research and understanding and better opportunity for health and living the fullest potential that that person can live,” Doyle says.

Learning about advances in understanding of Down syndrome and progress towards potential treatments gave Margie hope to be able to help Colin. “I found LuMind RDS when looking for a foundation that was best aligned with my desire to pursue the best life possible for Colin. At LuMind IDSC, I found a supportive community where I have been an active volunteer, fundraiser, and have worked hard to raise awareness of the research supported by LuMind RDS. For 4 years, it was also my privilege to be a board member, and I am now excited to continue to contribute to the advancement of DS research,” shared Margie.

The proceeds from the Funding Futures event fuel a deeper understanding of the cause of the conditions observed in Down syndrome and the development of appropriate and effective treatments to improve their health and independence. According to Margie, research is not merely an opportunity it is a responsibility we have for our loved ones.
